James Johnson - Memento Mori (2012)

A piece shot on 16mm film containing imagery typical of Vanitas and Victorian ‘Memento Mori’ -Life-Time-Death- with a contemporary horror element. The repetitive imagery related to death is meant to represent the fact that 16mm film is a dying art form, the physical film and what is projected is conflicted with overwhelming digital interference, by the end the of the film, it is completely dominated by digital interference as the mechanical heartbeat of the camera ceases.

Catherine Ulisky
has painted the connections between the European starlings in these photographs to show the entire flock as one faceted geometric shape.

Ulisky on her work:

My work presents and explores aspects of our surroundings in ways that are new to me, yet faithful to what exists in nature. Carefully observing natural phenomena reminds me constantly of the limitless complexity and wonder of the world we inhabit. It is an exciting, reciprocal process that continually reinvigorates my own appreciation for what is around me.

This dancer is engrossed in nature, the earth has covered and dried on his skin.

This could be an effective way to use the mud I cover myself in.

When is the nude body appropriate in performance?

I just watched a dance film where the nude body was used throughout, yet I could not find any relation to the concept and that made me think about how the nude should be used in work…

When the nude body doesn’t relate to a piece of work, what happens to the work when the nude body is placed in it? Is the concept altered?

When a piece of work is appropriate and related to the context, what happens when that body is dressed and if it is to be dressed, how should it be dressed?
